
Richard H. Thornton
Richard Thornton practices primarily in the fields of commercial real estate, business law and commercial lending, where he regularly represents businesses, lenders, sellers and buyers.
In real estate, he is experienced in financing, purchases and sales, development, leasing and title matters. He has been counsel in transactions involving shopping centers, apartment complexes, ranches and farms and commercial developments.
In his commercial and business practice, Mr. Thornton assists clients in their day-to-day legal needs as well as with financing, secured transactions (personal property lending), equipment leasing, supply agreements, the formation and conduct of businesses, contract negotiations and structuring, asset and stock purchase-sale transactions and the preparation and negotiation of loan documents.
Mr. Thornton has been involved with the Utah State Bar's Real Property Section, serving as chair from 1997 to 1998, as an officer from 1994 to 1997, and as a presenter on legislative updates and purchase-sale transactions at the section's regular seminars.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mr. Thornton received an H.B.A. degree in English, magna cum laude, from the University of Utah in 1976. As a student he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, was actively involved with the Hinckley Institute of Politics and was affiliated with the Sigma Chi social fraternity. In 1979 Mr. Thornton obtained a J.D. degree from the University of Utah College of Law, where he served on the Utah Law Review, authoring a note at 1979 Utah Law Review 303. He was a member of the Order of the Coif and was recognized as a William H. Leary Scholar.
Mr. Thornton was admitted to the Utah State Bar and the United States District Court, District of Utah, in 1979.
After 20 years of practice with another Salt Lake City law firm, where he served as president and director, Mr. Thornton joined Prince Yeates as a shareholder in 1999.
